Employee and Manager Compensation:
Addressing the Total Compensation Needs of Your Workforce

Who are Your Core Employees and Managers?

Although Wilson Group services address the specialty compensation practices of board of directors, executives and sales, we also have a significant number of engagements working with organizations on programs and initiatives that concern all employees and management, such as those jobs in engineering, technical areas, manufacturing, health care, analysis, consulting, marketing, administrative support, customer service, etc. The type of jobs in your core group will depend on your industry but they are your workforce, likely between 90% to 99% of your employees.

In other areas of this website, we described our compensation practice areas of base salary, variable cash compensation, performance management, performance recognition, total rewards strategy and equity compensation. Programs and initiatives for employees and managers involve these practice areas. A client engagement may consist of a combination of these practice areas or separate programs or specific tasks within these programs that address a need for the core group of employees and managers.

What are the Needs of your Workforce?

Common issues we work on for the core group of employees and managers are:

  1. What is the market base and total compensation levels as compared to the organization’s pay levels by job, function and business unit?
  2. How should we develop, describe and document the accountabilities, measures and skills for the jobs in our organization?
  3. What performance management process and competencies will provide meaningful feedback to employees?
  4. What are the appropriate components of compensation for each type and level of job?
  5. How can we expand our annual incentive program to all levels of the organization?
  6. Should we consider converting broad based salary bands?

Specific examples of results in this area that we have delivered for clients include:

  • A market study of the compensation levels of local competitors
  • Competitive market data on plant managers by country for a manufacturing firm
  • Recommendations to reengineer compensation department practices and processes
  • Salary planning process and tools for the merit increase process
  • Competitive market data, salary ranges and salary administration practices for an organization where the union was decertified
  • An integrated base and variable cash compensation program for high level individual contributor and management level employees
  • A new equity program for a global organization that offers equity to all employees and were relocating their headquarters to the United States
  • The development of a recognition program for university administration staff
  • Matching organization jobs to survey sources for the input of survey data

Wilson Group consultants help the client organization clarify needs, assess the situation and find the most thoughtful and efficient way to address workforce issues. As stated in our practice area materials, all engagements are related to the strategic plans of the organization and in a way consistent with culture and values. We look forward to the opportunity of working with you and develop compensation solutions for your workforce.
